What's New?

The years have really flown by! We have served over 8,000 members with the help of over 300 volunteers since we opened our doors. As we look back on all we have accomplished within the past eleven years, we are also looking forward to the exciting new partnerships and programs that have been created.

Three new youth and young adult programs have been introduced within the past two years: The Embrace Program, Aspire Program, and Getting Ahead Program. The Embrace Program focuses on providing services to at-risk youth enrolled in school. The Aspire Program seeks to offer an attainable pathway to individuals who struggle with traditional schooling by offering an alternative high school educational experience and internship placement to prepare these young adults to become successful in the workplace. The Getting Ahead Program is offered to the at-risk community as a whole by offering weekly sessions with the purpose motivating attendees to improve their quality of life.

We were honored to have our Aspire Program highlighted in Harford County Living magazine.

LASOS has teamed up with Harford County to encourage people in the community to fill out their census forms. We recognize the importance of the census to determine the level of funding our community will receive and are encouraging our members to complete their census forms and come in for assistance if needed.

In partnership with the Town of Bel Air, we now host an annual Haunts and History Tour as a fundraiser for our literacy programs. Attendees visit some fo the town's most haunted sites while also getting some background on the legendary history of the sites.

This year we also hosted our first Murder Mystery fundraiser where guests were able to dress up for an interactive dinner where they had to work together with their table to try to solve the murder before time ran out. We have been able to have a great deal of fun at each of our events, and we are looking forward to our upcoming whiskey and steak fundraiser this spring.

LASOS is also blessed to have created a number of new partnerships with businesses and community members throughout Harford County. We are grateful to all of our partners and would like to give them a special thanks here:

  • Harford Mutual Insurance
  • Boorghi International
  • Patti Dresher
  • Kyle Tomlinson with State Farm Insurance
  • The Harford County Office of Drug Control Policy
  • Aberdeen Proving Ground
  • The Thatcher Family
  • Hazel and Larry Hopkins

Our programming also continues to grow and develop, this year we held 4 familyliteracy programs around the county, 4 days a youth mentoring a week for 273 youth, leadership seminars for children serving 225 as they grow into productive citizens, delivered ESOL classes to 354 adults and aided 23 new Americans as they made their final step into being a US Citizen.

We supported 331 people to obtain health care, 245 with legal services referral, 2156 case work files, fed 790 families in need through food drives with the Maryland Food Bank, 279 with housing, and helped secure employment for 689 people.

Currently we are finalizing current programs gearing up for Summer Camp and planning programs for the 2015-2016 year
